We went camping a lot when I was a kid. My Dad taught me to make teepee fires when I was eight or nine years old and I’ve pretty much made all my fires that way ever since. That’s a great way to make a big, bright, fast burning fire, but it’s not really suitable for suburban back yard fire building. The low and slow upside down fire method is what I’ll be using in the future. Interestingly, an upside down fire is actually much faster easier to build! I’ve watched Tom build upside down fires in cabin stoves on many troop outings. They do indeed last all night on most occasions. We obviously had no way to restrict the air flow in my back yard fire pit, so the fire burned faster than usual. It lasted till near the end of our meeting, however, and that was at least three hours. We added very little extra fuel to it, and the base logs were thoroughly consumed. Not only does an upside down fire burn low and slow, it’s also very fuel efficient. What’s not to love?! By the way, Tom is the current scoutmaster of Troop 516, Centerville, OH. He’s an outstanding leader, great friend and one of the most patient people I know with young scouts. And, along with his two sons, he’s a Firecrafter!!! Thanks for all you do, Tom! Ahi! Sua! Qul!
