Swift DB4 opening laps at the Taupo GP

Opening laps from races 1,2,3 at the Taupo GP in the Swift DB4. Car was put together at the last minute and given a run. 00:00 Race 1 01:55 Race 2 06:20 Race 3 4 weeks out - Christmas - I get the call in the days before Christmas to say the machining on the 2 x Atlantic 4AGE's I wanted to build had been completed and I could pick up the parts for assembly. I now have something to do over the break as the F5000 is on ice at the moment pending parts. 3 weeks out - New Years - I have the bottom ends assembled but find while doing one of the heads that I need a different valve stem seal to what I thought I needed. Everywhere is closed so buying local isn't an option. Tim Sillay was kind enough to courier me some so I could complete one of the builds! 2 weeks out - Engine assembled - With the engine together I pull the Swift off the wall (I mount it on the wall to save garage space when its apart) and start putting it back together. Whilst fitting the gearbox to the engine I manage to damage one of the clutch plates and can't find any stock locally. Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies to the rescue and I get new clutch plates from America in 4 days to my door! I go to renew my competition license thinking Taupo might be a possibility but find their system is down and so I cannot enter. 1 week out - All back together - Garage4age is kind enough to let me do a late notice run in on the dyno to make sure everything is ok. Car now ready!. License comes through from MSNZ so I can enter the event but on the way home from the dyno the windscreen cracks on the tow van. Tuesday before - Van goes into the glazier and they don't want to finish the job until I fix the rust. Soonest rebooking time is Friday. I call some panel beaters but they are talking weeks and I want to talk days. Wednesday before - I fix the rust myself and drop the van off. Thursday before - I steal my parents X3 BMW, it can tow but once a set of tyres are in the boot it doesn't leave space for much else, I end up packing the bare essentials in anticipation for driving down Friday morning. Friday of the event - I had planed to drive down with my dad but for reasons out of my control I do it alone. I drive down at 5AM to arrive at 8AM so I can pass scrutineering and do P1 and P2. In P2 I only do 1 lap as I got some warnings about fuel pressure. My partner in Auckland goes to pickup the van at 5PM, except the place has already closed for the day! Some urgent phone calls later they open up and give her the van, she goes home to grab another set of old tyres for me and some odd and ends that are easy to grab from my spares in the garage. She then picks up my dad and we meet in Hamilton to exchange vehicles and people. Saturday - It's wet and I am unable to qualify as I only have old slicks. I start race 1 from the back and go from P12 to P3 in lap 1, some laps later I spin into the kitty litter as the tyres were worse than first thought and I wasn't good enough to catch it. For race 2 I swap on the second set I brought down and find that whilst bald and with some cuts, they are much better than the first set and I end up being the first Atlantic home in the race. It also becomes apparent the starter solenoid has now failed and the fuel pump is on the way out which is why the pressure is dropping. Sunday - The last race - Gary Rush sorts me out with what is now my 3rd set of old tyres for the weekend, there were some questions around how good they might be but I'll give anything a try at this point. Thanks to the crew from the other teams we bump start the car for the final race, but whilst leaving to take to the track I carry more revs than normal to avoid stalling, but then blow up first gear. The magnets do their job and collect all the broken bits and I am able to continue, less first gear. The car is running very rich at this point so is a bit down on power, but I figured since the pump was loosing pressure it was the safest option to bump the fueling up. On the warmup lap my head is not the right space to race, having to think about air fuel ratios (not wanting to damage my new motor), listening carefully for sounds and feelings from the gearbox and lastly regretting going onto Garys tyres (they end up a step down from what I had prior). I start the race and lack of pace, most of the lap my eyes are glued on the dash making sure it isn't running lean and my mind is worrying about what the gearbox might do, I do a couple of laps and almost spin a few times........ until I see an oil line at which time I give up an enter the pits and call it a weekend. Fortunately the oil line wasn't me but neither the car or myself were in the right condition to finish the race. Thankfully the gearbox only needs a first gear, the starter needs a solenoid and a new fuel pump will solve the pressure issue (when I first test ran the car the pump was making some odd noises but came right.......until it didn't).
