To mark the release of the Institute of Public Affairs’ latest research essay, The Flag for All Australians, Daniel Wild and Morgan Begg sat down to discuss the importance of the Australian National Flag with Federal MPs, Phillip Thompson and Henry Pike. Both Henry and Phillip have been strong advocates for upholding mainstream Australian values and protecting our national symbols. At a time of immense division in our society, it is more critical than ever that our flag and our national day are protected, which is why The Flag for All Australians research essay is so important. Many people know that the Australian flag was unveiled on 3 September 1901 soon after the birth of Federation, but most people are unaware that the search for an Australian flag began decades earlier, with colonists striving to find symbols to reflect the emerging Australian identity. The flag unveiled in 1901 is, and always was, a product of the community, not a mandate from the political elite, which is now behind a divisive campaign to erase Australia’s flag.
