Curated Tour 02 Second World War: Operation GOLD FLAKE and Liberation of Holland (1945)
Our Curator, Georgiana Stanciu, PhD has invited historian Brad St. Croix, MA, to briefly explore WWII Operation Gold Flake. Almost forgotten today, this operation saw the redirecting the 1st Canadian Corps from Italy to north-western Europe, in March 1945. They would be dispatched to the northern flank of the Western Front aside the Second British Army to liberate Belgium and Holland. The RCR reached Antwerp in March 1945, then marched to Holland. Between 12 and 17 April they were engaged with the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade in the capture of Apeldoorn (Operation CANNONSHOT). Recorded on 29 March 2022, edited for clarity and length.
