Post World War II, a new world order consolidated. The rising middle class in the OECD enabled robust taxation making it the backbone of the welfare state. Nation states consolidated three powers: the power of politics, the power of finance, and the power of information. At the same time, emerging market-based neo-liberalism globalised finance, making corporations gain more financial muscle than states. By the end of the 20th century, technology stepped in to globalise information and nation-states lost their major sovereign claims. The 2008 economic crisis further made people question their state and its compact with the globalised financial elite. Hard times are times for telling tales, constructing narratives to keep the flock banded together. Solutions for the 21st century need to be designed — will it be a new mode of globalisation?
