Nigeria’s manufacturing sector is pushing back against a proposed tax stamp and track-and-trace system on excisable goods, warning it could increase production costs and slow an already fragile recovery. The plan, presented by the Nigeria Customs Service, is designed to curb illicit trade and improve revenue collection. However, industry stakeholders argue that the proposed hybrid paper-digital model may lack full real-time transparency and could prove less efficient than fully digital alternatives. Some manufacturers have described the stamp fee as a hidden tax, raising concerns about compliance costs and potential price increases for consumers. Dr Femi Egbesola, Co-facilitator of the MSME Community of Practice at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) join the conversation.
