Grafting Ficus nerifolia on ficus retusa - first step for a shohin bonsai

'Tsugiki' is the Japanese word for grafting. In bonsai, it is a very common practice to graft new type of foliage. Typical examples are seen in pines and junipers. In this video I have experimented in grafting ficus nerifolia onto ficus retusa. If all goes well and the grafts take I will prune back to get more compact growth and create a shohin bonsai. I am basing my work, as in other situations, the stump and the graft belong to the same botanical family. The ficus retusa stump was grown over several years from a small cutting. The grafts of ficus nerifolia were taken from the 'daughter of the daughter of the daughter' of the first ficus nerifolia that was imported to Malta many years ago from America. ..Probably it was one of the first in Europe.
