This Saturday, December 19 would be the 80th birthday of American folk poet Phil Ochs. William Worthy, the man he wrote this song about, would be 100 next year. Mr. Worthy was an African-American journalist, Civil Rights activist, and dissident from Boston. A Freedom Rider and confidante of Malcolm X, he became a reporter who made a habit of risking his career and livelihood to stand up for the freedom of the press. Over and over again, he travelled to and reported from spots around the globe where the U.S. government told him he couldn't go, most famously Cuba in 1961. As a younger man, Mr. Worthy had been a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. When Nieman celebrated its 80th anniversary a couple of years ago, I had the privilege of performing this song at an event honoring some of the world's best and most adventurous journalists. Phil's Sister, Sonny, was in attendance as well. It was a special night. Happy birthday, Phil. Thank you, Mr. Worthy. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/us...
