We're in the 4th country of our Worldschooling Adventure. In case you missed it, we flew from our home in Hawaii and landed first in Copenhagen, Denmark. In this video, we're taking in the majestic sites of Porto & Villa Nova de Gaia. We traveled through the city on an electric Ford Model T replica and stayed in the historic House of Sandeman. As usual, we tried all the delicious foods. My favorite spot that we kept returning to for tasty treats was Odete, a vegan bakery with the most delicious pastel de nata and coffee. This video was filmed about a year and a half ago. We spent 10 days in Porto and there were many hours of video to go through. This one was the most difficult to make for a few reasons. Taj (and I) learned a little about Portuguese history. As with any colonizing nation, there was a sense of disparity between some of the country's inhabitants. Additionally, in the fifteenth century, Portugal became the first European nation to take significant part in African slave trading. We weren't sure how much of that to include in these videos and honestly, we're still mulling it over for Worldschooling in Porto Pt 2. The other reason this video was difficult to make is that, despite it's tumultuous history, it is a truly captivating place. So much so, that I want to move there. However, upon returning, we realized how similar the plight of the Portuguese is to that of native Hawaiians in Hawaii. Both are being pushed out due to tourists and transplants increasing the cost of living. We didn't want to overly glorify Portugal and add to that problem. What you see is the result of a lot of thought and creativity. Taj was able to exercise the most creative freedom in the direction and editing of this film. He finally convinced me to get rid of the "millennial voiceovers". He wanted everything to be more cinematic. As a result, I think this video is now my favorite. _____________ My name is Antonia and I'm traveling with my 16-yr old son Taj while our awesome husband and dad (Keoni) holds down the fort back home. We are visiting some of the places Taj has learned about in his History and Geography studies. Additionally, he is taking his love of photography, filmmaking, and art abroad as the traveling teenage artist. This is our first worldschooling/unschooling adventure and so far it's been a blast!
