#pau #dbe #pbw872 #punjab #wheat #crop P.A.U. has once again proved its superiority by securing the first position in the entire North India in the All India Joint Research Experiments on Varieties conducted at the National Level. These experiments were conducted under the project for improvement of wheat and barley by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, for timely sowing under Senju conditions in 2024-25. The results of these experiments were confirmed at the National Level Wheat Research Scientists’ Conference held at Rajmata Vijayakshmi Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior from 25-27 August, 2025. PBW 872 maintained its historical high yield potential during the experiments conducted in two major wheat producing regions of India (North-Western Plains and North Eastern Plains). Under this process, after three consecutive years of observation of the best wheat varieties developed by various breeding programs across India, including research institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 29 State Agricultural Universities of India and private companies, the variety with the highest yield and resistance to pests and diseases is recommended. PBW 872, as a result of its high performance during the observation in these experiments, was recommended for cultivation in the year 2022 for the North-Western Plains region, which includes Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (excluding Kota and Udaipur divisions), Western Uttar Pradesh (excluding Jhansi division), Jammu and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmir, Ponta Valley, Una district of Himachal Pradesh and Terai region of Uttarakhand. In the year 2024-25, experiments were conducted at various locations to test improved varieties for the North-Western Plains under conditions of high fertilizer and early sowing. In these experiments, PBW 872 with an average yield of 79.6 quintals per hectare won the first position, surpassing the currently popular varieties such as DBW 327 (78.3 quintals/ha), DBW 371 (78.1 quintals/ha), DBW 372 (74.1 quintals/ha) and DBW 187 (73.4 quintals/ha), (59.9 quintals/ha). This confirms that PBW 872 is the best variety under conditions of early sowing, high organic and chemical fertilizers as well as fungicides and growth regulators. | Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana tested PBW 872 under recommended fertilizers and has recommended it for wheat cultivation in Punjab state in 2025 using common fertilizers under timely drought conditions. PBW 872 recorded an average yield of 24.4 quintals per acre with common recommended fertilizers under timely drought conditions which was 2.9%, 8.3% and 11.7% higher than PBW 826, PBW 766 and DBW 222 respectively. This variety has moderate resistance to yellow and brown rot. PBW 872 takes 152 days to mature and is a very suitable variety for the paddy-wheat crop cycle of Punjab. Its average height is 100 cm, so there is less risk of lodging. Its grains are thick, shiny and its 1000 grain weight is 40-48 grams, which will be helpful in marketing. It is hoped that PBW 872 will provide more profit to the farmers by giving stable yield, disease tolerance, good grain quality and high yield in all types of farming methods in all agricultural conditions of Punjab. The seeds of PBW 872 are being available at the Kisan Melas organized by PAU, Ludhiana, which has become a center of attraction for the farmers. PAU Vice Chancellor of PAU Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Director of Research Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt and Head of Plant Breeding and Genetics Department Dr. Varinder Singh Sohu congratulated the entire wheat research team on the occasion of this variety being the best at the national level. Dr. Gosal said that farmers should give priority to the cultivation of varieties developed by PAU to get more production from wheat.
