The intro on “Strawberry Fields Forever” creates a dreamlike, slightly eerie atmosphere that immediately sets the tone of the song. It opens with a descending Mellotron flute figure played by Paul McCartney on a Mellotron Mk II. A Mellotron is an early keyboard sampler that uses taped recordings of real instruments — in this case, a recorded flute ensemble. It’s one of the earliest and most famous uses of the Mellotron in pop music, and it became hugely influential in psychedelic rock and later progressive rock. I play it here on the electric guitar.
