We have now made it to the Clay split of Blaze Black 2 Redux, one of the hardest splits for our team to face. Most of it boils down to having to face Clay with a type disadvantage. From the start, I knew Clay would give me trouble. But before we get to him, let’s talk about the rest of the split. In order to prepare for the challenges ahead, we get access to four new encounters in Escavalier, Empoleon, Ferrothorn, and Durant. If you’re wondering how I got Ferrothorn and Durant, they are obtainable via Chargestone Cave which you can access part of before battling Clay. In terms of evolutions, we get access to Bisharp, Aggron, Magnezone, and Metagross. At this point, our team is full of fully-evolved Pokémon who are now more than ready to take on what’s ahead. Speaking of which, the threats ahead are as follows: Charles, Rood, Norman, and Clay. Charles is a tough one because his team is in a triple battle. For this fight, we have to position Bisharp on the left, Lucario in the middle, and Steelix on the right. The biggest problem with this battle was not getting cooked by the Sigilyph which has Heat Wave to hit our entire team for super-effective damage. On our successful attempt however, it went for Icy Wind for some reason, making the rest of his team easier to handle and allowing us to beat Charles on our fourth attempt. Rood wasn’t nearly as bad though he still was a decent challenge. While the lead Bouffalant does have super-effective Close Combat, Lucario has just enough bulk to barely live the hit. What we really need to prepare for is Rood’s Chandelure who has a staggering 145 Special Attack. Lucario can deal good damage to Chandelure with Bone Rush but doesn’t land enough hits so Empoleon has to finish it off. Then Stoutland comes in which takes out Empoleon. From there, the battle becomes much more manageable with it being a case of pivoting the right Pokémon in order to handle what Rood has and we beat him on our second attempt. Norman is one of many trainers coming up who we have a type advantage against. With that said, this fight was hard to prepare for. The main problem is the fact that his team is quite fast and my team can’t quite keep up. Even my fastest Pokémon Lucario can only keep up with two of Norman’s Pokémon. Much like with Rood, Lucario has just enough bulk to survive a Flamethrower from Exploud, allowing Lucario to take it out with a couple of Aura Spheres. The hard part comes with the rest of his team who outspeeds Lucario. Fortunately, Lucario can take out Tauros and deal good damage to Zangoose with Vacuum Wave before going down. From there, Metagross takes on Slaking after eating up a powerful Earthquake and Bisharp finishes up what’s left, allowing us to defeat Norman on our first try. In the end, the battle against Norman was pretty easy. It was so easy as a matter of fact, I battled Norman twice to get extra Sitrus Berries for future fights. Enough beating around the bush though, let’s talk about Clay. Clay is the next big roadblock in our run due to having a type advantage against us with his Ground types. What’s worse is that he has permanent sandstorm, enabling constant chip damage against our team. At least, having all Steel types, we don’t have to worry about the chip damage. What we do have to worry about are the powerful Earthquakes that will no doubt deal lots of damage. However, I have come up with a strategy to beat him. It basically involves setting up Iron Defense with Ferrothorn and abusing Ability Storage. With Iron Defense and Leech Seed, as long as Clay’s Pokémon don’t crit, Ferrothorn is unbreakable. If something does crit though, it does make staying alive significantly harder. Thankfully, on our second attempt, Ferrothorn is able to make enough progress that Metagross and Lucario can finish up what’s left, especially with my backup strategy in Ability Storage. Basically, Ability Storage is a bug where the opposing Pokémon will assume every Pokémon on your team is immune to a certain type if it triggers an ability like Water Absorb or Levitate. This is paramount to making sure we can beat Clay since it shuts down threats like Excadrill and Nidoking. Combining these two strategies together made Clay more than doable and allowed us to beat Clay on our second attempt. With Clay behind us, we can expect the game to get easier for a time. Clay was the last big roadblock in our run prior to the Elite Four, meaning we only have neutral to good matchups from here. Well.. at least until we reach the endgame but that won’t be for a while. For the time being, I’m just glad I made it past Clay.
