Despite the challenges of pollution and concrete channels installed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1971, we navigate through hidden urban waterways. The journey begins with a daring climb down a cement wall and portaging a quarter-mile until the water deepens. Along the way, we encounter a red-eared slider turtle, pass under several bridges, including Route 1 and 9 and the NJ Turnpike, and explore the beautiful Matano Park, filled with wildlife like egrets, great blue herons, ducks, and geese. As we reach the Arthur Kill, a large wake from a speedboat nearly swamps our kayak, leading to an emergency pull-off at a marina. We finish our adventure at Veterans Memorial Waterfront Park and celebrate with a slice of pizza from Mario's.
