(8 Sep 1995) Natural Sound The clearing up operations have begun in the Caribbean island of Antigua after the devastation caused by Hurricane Luis. The island was virtually isolated from air and sea access until Thursday two days after being hit by one of the most powerful hurricanes this century. At least 13 people were killed as the storm swept through the region. The first day of relative quiet in Antigua after the vicious storms of the last 48 hours. The islanders could scarcely believe their eyes as the full extent of the destruction caused by Hurricane Luis slowly began to emerge. The storm tore through the eastern Caribbean with 125-mph winds leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. At least 13 people were killed as the 700-mile-wide storm swept through the region. The hurricane shredded the island, demolishing entire neighborhoods, yachts, restaurants and luxury hotels. Tourists were left stranded without electricity, running water or telephone services. It's still too soon to assess the extent of the losses caused by the storm - the worst of its kind this century. Hurricane Luis was not expected to reach the U-S mainland, but Bermuda has issued a tropical storm watch.
