This is a live concert recording from 2013, performed at the Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná (EMBAP / UNESPAR) in Curitiba, Brazil, where I completed my undergraduate degree. "Fantasia & Echo" is a standout composition by the Dutch Golden Age virtuoso Jacob van Eyck (c. 1590–1657), included in his massive collection Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Flute's Pleasure Garden). Musical Structure and Innovation Unlike most pieces in the collection, which are variations on popular tunes, this is a free-form fantasia that focuses on acoustic experimentation. The Echo Effect: Van Eyck was likely influenced by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s echo fantasias for keyboard. He adapts this for the recorder by repeating musical phrases to simulate a natural echo. Dynamic Markings: The original score explicitly uses the terms "forte" (strong) and "pian." (soft). This is historically significant because the recorder is a fixed-volume instrument; blowing softer usually drops the pitch. Technical Challenge: To achieve the echo without going out of tune, modern performers must use advanced techniques like alternative fingerings or subtle changes in articulation to create the illusion of distance. About the Composer: "The Orpheus of Utrecht" Virtuosity and Disability: Blind from birth, Van Eyck was a nobleman who became a world-renowned expert in bell casting and carillon tuning. Public Performances: He famously entertained the citizens of Utrecht by playing his recorder in the Janskerkhof churchyard during summer evenings. Historical Impact: Der Fluyten Lust-hof remains the largest collection of music for a single wind instrument ever published by a single composer.
