The first of three classes with Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, author of Judaism Deconstructed: A Spiritual Manifesto for the 21st Century. In 1973, Michael Strassfeld co-edited The Jewish Catalog, a groundbreaking counter-cultural DIY guide to traditional Jewish practices written for a generation of young Jews who hadn't grown up with traditions like hosting Shabbat or building a sukkah. Fifty years later, Strassfeld, a Reconstructionist Rabbi who retired from the pulpit in 2015, has written a new book that he calls a “bookend” to The Jewish Catalog. ”If the first book is a Jewish “how to,” the latest, he says, is a “why bother?” Judaism Disrupted begins with the premise that most American Jews don't find fulfillment in Judaism as it is currently practiced -- as rote performance of ritual or halachah. With a focus kavanah (intention) rather than commandment, Strassfeld outlines a framework for a revitalized Judaism characterized by freedom and mindfulness, and drawing on values like social justice and holiness (in the Hasidic sense that holiness can be found anywhere). He'll discuss parts of that framework with us in 3 sessions that will include study of traditional texts.
