(9 Oct 1998) Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat Forensic experts have found more than 170 bodies in one of the biggest mass graves discovered in Bosnia so far. The grave has been found in the village of Zvornik, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) east of Tuzla, on serb-held territory. The bodies are believed to be Bosnian Muslims who were killed at the very beginning of the Bosnian war which lasted from 1992-1995. More than 170 bodies of Muslim civilians killed during the Bosnian war have been exhumed from a mass grave near the eastern town of Zvornik. Most of the bodies had been put in military plastic bags and placed in an orderly manner in the grave. It is one of the biggest graves found in Bosnia, following the three-and-a-half year war which killed more than 200-thousand people. The victims are believed to be Muslims killed by Serb forces in 1992. A team of forensic scientists, many from the United States are helping with the exhumation. SOUNDBITE: (English) "What we're finding here is a mass grave. It has been investigated in the past so that we had a suspicion that there were a large number of people buried here. We have come out today to do an inter-entity exhumation, that is with the cooperation of the Serbs and Bosnian Muslims to excavate these individuals and remove them and return them to their families. So far I think we have found, uncovered approximately 150 we anticipate maybe 100 more or even more than that." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Jill Gould, Forensic Pathologist The head of the Bosnian State Commission, Amor Masovic says it's believed the bodies are those of people missing since 1992 from neighbouring villages. He said they found the grave thanks to witnesses who came forward, saying they saw soldiers of the former Yugoslav Army bury the bodies. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "We believe that we are on the trail of the largest mass grave discovered in former Yugoslavia, according to the number of victims found. At this moment, at this mass grave, we have found the remains of 170 victims and in one more day of work we believe that number of victims will increase to over 200." SUPER CAPTION: Amor Masovic, Bosnian State Commission for missing persons Zvornik is part of Bosnia's Serb Republic, which together with the Muslim-Croat Federation comprise post-war Bosnia. Like other towns in eastern Bosnia, it was ethnically cleansed by Serb forces which expelled or killed most Muslims living in the area before the war. U-S members of the NATO-led peace force in Bosnia are protecting the area during the exhumation, along with local police. Almost two thousand bodies have been exhumated from different mass graves in the area, most of them are believed to be victims of Bosnian Serbs who overran the town of Srebrenica in July 1995.
