In this interview, Dr. Jaume Catalá from the Children's Retina Area Hospital San Joan de Deu, Barcelona, Spain, shares his surgical experience in pediatric eye surgery using the Proveo 8 OCT microscope with built-in EnFocus intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT). In addition to the great visualization quality of the Proveo 8 ophthalmic microscope, the integrated OCT imaging provides additional insights into the delicate subsurface tissue of the eye. When treating e.g. premature eyes with complex pathologies, intraoperative OCT provides important information and helps to distinguish the fine layers of the cornea. Every child, every single case I deal with gives me a life lesson. A premature eye can be around 14 or 15 mm, so we are working in a very small space with a very complex pathology, where we need to see very well the fine structures in which we work. Using a microscope with high visualization capacity and optical coherence tomography helps to define the different layers in which we are working this is of vital importance. In addition to the visualization quality and the built-in optical coherence tomography, this microscope has the added advantage that its software is, in my opinion, very intuitive and easy for the surgeon to use. This way we can get what we want just when we want it and in the easiest way. For me, this is one of the major strengths of this microscope. OCT is becoming increasingly important in new therapies and we need additional visual information to know exactly where we have to work. OCT is critical for anterior segment surgery because it allows differentiation of the various layers of the cornea. When we work in the retina, a layer that is between 100 - 200 micrometers thick, highly precise maneuvers are key, especially when it comes to the injection of a drug or the removal of tissue. Here OCT enables us to work very accurately. Mainly because of the visualization quality and the technical quality of the tomography, but especially how intuitive the software is to use.
