The beach at Arromanches les Bains in Normandy was given the codename: "Gold Beach" during the D-Day landing on June 6th 1944. It was assaulted by the British 50th Infantry and was one of two beaches where the artificial Mulberry harbours was installed. The harbours had been towed across the English Channel in order for ships to dock and supply the Allied forces after landing. Parts of them are still visible today. Approximately 20 miles further down the coast is Omaha beach which was assaulted by the American 1st and 29th divisions. The American Cemetery is adjacent to the beach and contains over 9,000 graves.
