Leave the area.” STORYLINE: Tensions were escalating on the streets of downtown Los Angeles as police sought to disperse demonstrators, many of whom seemed caught off guard by the abrupt orders to leave. Police on horseback pushed protesters back. As police fired flash bangs and canisters of tear gas, protesters responded with loud fireworks and calls to “hold the line.” Masses of demonstrators packed into streets, parks and plazas across the U.S. on Saturday to protest against President Donald Trump, marching through downtown areas and small towns, blaring anti-authoritarian chants mixed with support for protecting democracy and immigrant rights. Confrontations were isolated. But police in Los Angeles, where protests over federal immigration enforcement raids erupted a week earlier and sparked demonstrations across the country, used tear gas and crowd-control munitions to clear out protesters after the formal event ended. What caused police to move to clear protesters hours before the previous day’s 8pm curfew was not clear.
