#SCOSoundbites - Symphonic Poem – Hymm of Mount Li Concert: Enchanting Sceneries: Xu Zhijun and SCO Date: 13 January 2024 Composed by Rao Yuyan The orchestral tone poem, Hymn of Mount Li, was composed according to the middle stanza of a well-known poem by the great poet Du Fu from the Tang Dynasty, titled ‘Thoughts on The Way From The Capital to Fengxian County in Five Hundred Words’. In the autumn of 1982, the Chinese Orchestra of the Xi’an Conservatory of Music premiered this composition in the First Chang’an Music Week. This composition illustrates Du Fu’s ten-year predicament in Chang’an, witnessing the decline of the dynasty. At a cold and dark night, he travelled alone to visit his relatives. When passing Mount Li in the early morning, he heard the distant sounds of merry making from the Huaqing Palace. The sentimental and patriotic poet was aware of the tough and difficult time that his country and fellow countrymen were going through, coupled with the impending dangers facing the dynasty, he gave a deep sigh. This eventually led him to write the famous verses in the poem “Behind the crimson doors, meat and wine are left to spoil. By the roads, are bones of those who starved and froze.” This composition consists of four connected sections. The first section expresses the scenario of passing through Mount Li in the wee hours. The second section portrays the music of merry making from the Huaqing Palace as heard when the poet passed by Mount Li. The third section depicts the spectacular scene of songs and dances. The fourth section expresses the poet’s grievance and angst. In order to manifest the unique character of the original poem, the Xi’an Percussion Music is adopted in the composition, and the usage of polyphony was experimented with.
