It is a story written by Kate Chopin whose birth name is Katherine O'Flaherty (February 8, 1851 – August 22, 1904). She was an American author who has authored multiple short stories and novels. Most of the scholars consider her as a forerunner of American 20th-century feminist authors. One of her most appreciated works include her 1899 novel The Awakening. The American writer wrote ‘A Respectable Woman’ in 1894 and the interesting fact is that it was published in Vogue magazine that year. The story from the literature section is about a woman (Mrs Baroda) whose husband (Gaston) invites his old college friend (Gouvernail) to stay with them. She found her husband’s friend to be a man with reserved personality and got disappointed to find that he has nothing interesting like her husband says. After knowing that Gouvernail was about to stay in their house for a week, she told her husband that she will leave the house and stay with her aunt until the guest returns. She was sitting outside on a bench and suddenly the guest appears with a cigar and join her quoting poetry to the night. Slowly, Mrs Baroda realized that Gouvernail was in a talkative mood and then he shared about his early college days with her spouse. She develops feeling to the new man which makes her feel confused about her feelings. She felt to touch his face and whisper against him in a manner that if she was not a respectable woman. But she carries a reputed personality and was married, she decided to move away from her feelings. She didn’t share the feeling to her husband because she was a respectable woman although she wished to tell Gaston about her strange feelings towards Gouvernail. The following day, her husband found that she has already left the house and won’t come until the guest has left. When her husband suggested that his friend Gouvernail would visit them again, she strongly opposed/. However, she took her step back on this and allowed Gaston invite Gouvernail to stay with them again.
