The O-trek is a great trail. It involves a mixture of scenery and terrains and really builds you up for the beauty that is on the W, but if you are looking to the O for things you can’t get elsewhere, you’re going to be disappointed. The O does allow you to meet and get to know some great people as you are all going to the same camps and going through the same challenges. In my opinion however, the John Gardener Pass was not worth the pain of the downhill and days after we passed it five people died in a blizzard with 120mph winds. Make your own decision here. One of the smartest things I heard people do is make the climb to the towers on day one if the sky is clear whether on the O or W then have the option to climb them on your last day as well. Weather is a huge factor, and I happened to get lucky on the last day. Give yourself the best chance. Also Refugio Frances is a great place to dry your things if you need to. When you get into Chile’ through immigration. They will give you what looks like a receipt that has PDI at the top. Keep this in your passport. It’s important. You will be asked for it at every hotel, refugio, and anytime you spend more than $100 USD. Other than being excused the VAT, I don’t know why you need it, but you do. Don’t flush toilet paper. The pipes are too small or something. I had to reach in a couple times and pull it out. You’ll see the signs. It’s all of Chile, just don’t.
