Lifehouse | 4 February 2026 Notes: Tonight we unpacked Matthew 16:24 and what it really means to follow Jesus: Matthew 16:24 “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’” Deny yourself = deny selfish interests, not pretending you have no needs Take up your cross = willingness to follow Jesus no matter the cost Follow Him = believe Him, conform to His example, and if needed, suffer for His name Q: Why does Jesus say this first? Because self-life blocks love, and love is essential for fellowship with God. If we are full of self, we miss His leading. The six needs of the soul: 1. Stability and rest 2. Love and connection 3. Agency and freedom 4. Worth and significance 5. Growth 6 . Purpose and contribution These needs are real. The issue is not having needs. The issue is trying to satisfy them apart from Christ. Jesus sustains the Christian walk by being the source: John 4:14 - “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again...” Philippians 4:19 - “my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Scripture for each soul need: Rest: Matthew 11:28 Love: Romans 8:38-39 Freedom: 2 Corinthians 3:17 Worth: Psalm 8:4 Growth: Philippians 1:6 Purpose: Ephesians 2:10 So how do we walk with God practically? Start here: Matthew 6:33 - Seek first the Kingdom Psalm 23:1 - The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want Psalm 34:10 - Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing Psalm 37:4 - Delight yourself in the Lord 1 John 2:15-17 - Do not love the world Takeaway: Walking with God is not denying that you have needs. It is deprioritising the pursuit of your own needs, seeking Him first, and letting Him meet every need in Christ. Stay connected!
