Mud Test: Day 1, Layer 1: Maybe not as absorbent as I would like- I'm having some trouble with water control and The colors aren't really building up all that much. There was a scar on the paper and it's really visible when you add paint. Some warping where the opening is, but otherwise holding tight nicely. Colors diffuse out really prettily. As it dried, it warped so badly it ripped itself lose. I've had a lot of blocks catastrophically fail, but this was the first time a round block has failed this badly Day 2: I saturated it pretty well and that seemed to calm down the kip. I did have to hold it down while I was painting though- not exactly something you want to have to do with a block bound watercolor pad. Took the layer of water quite well, with minimal reactivation, and I was able to glaze a second layer of color on. The scar is still pretty noticeable Day 3: So this seems to handle loads of color quite well, but we need to figure out some way to reinforce the block so it holds it tight Field Test: Arteza Round Fieldtest: The paper is kinda pulpy? It didn't take sketching with the red lead well (i had to be careful not to cut into the paper), inking kinda spidered out (esp with the softer brushpens), and whiel colors dry fairly vibrant, they also sometimes dry kinda dirty looking (like the yellows). ALSO! This block does NOT hold the paper taut, over the course of a couple really wet layers, the paper broke free of the block. That said, it does dry tight, so just be aware that while it's wet, it kinda has a mind of its own. Granulation in this paper is muddy rather than striking, I think due to the strange paper texture. Layering, particularly wet into wet, also seems like it’s going to be a challenge, because layers seem to lift right off the surface rather than mix and layer. Painting on this paper, it just seems like it’s already so chewed up and pulpy. I didn’t notice all these issues during the mud test- maybe it’s my subject matter? I have a feeling the masking fluid I put down will probably not come up without a fight, but we’ll see. Maybe the pulpiness is a lack of sizing? This is a technique you guys have seen me do a few times, so it’s one I know I can control, and I figured it’d be a fun test. I’m definitely kinda frustrated by how messy it looks- this is a reason I like a somewhat assertive paper texture on my coldpress- it gives the granulation somewhere ot settle. Paints also have a tendency to reactivate on this paper. Removing the masking fluid does tear up this paper. It’s so disappointing, because I was hoping for a cool reveal, and now i have to patch up a bunch of areas ruined/chewed up by the masking fluid on this weird cottonrag. It’s just really frustrating to spend so long building up color and painting something only to remove the masking fluid and have it tear up the paper surface. Removed easily from the block with a palette knife. The Verdict: I was really disappointed by how this handled- the mud test seemed promising, so I figured it’d be up to something a bit more fun. This paper bleeds when you ink on it, buckles when you add water, doesn’t have an assertive enough texture for nice granulation, and tears up when you remove the masking fluid- so really, it can’t be trusted to be up to what you want to paint.
