This is my personal experience, this is not a tutorial. I show you how I Rigged my Aerial Silk to a tree. The tree i'm using is a strong Oak Tree and the branch is 20 feet high and in my yard. I WOULD NOT TRY THIS IF I WERE YOU!!! NOTE: I have been putting up silks in trees for years. I know what to look for and take the risk for what I cannot see. I love taking my silk on vacation, going to a park and checking out the trees, making sure I find a thick strong branch to hang the silk from. This is a RISK!!! But for me I will continue to do this. I have had a lot of fun in parks doing Aerial Silks. Lower branch in a Park in Florida. The camera is closer. Here is that video from my Instagram: / clc8ajdgups CAUTION: This is my own experience!! Be very careful. If you do this, you do it at your own risk. Yes it is very dangerous. If you do try this I DON'T START on a tree that is real high. You need to have enough strength to climb and take this down, or a ladder. I would NOT suggest this if you have just started Aerial Silks. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND TREES AND THIS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE!!! Understanding Trees for your Aerial Silk: 1. If you do choose to do this make sure the branch that will hold the Aerial Apparatus is thick enough. The rule of thumb is to attach to a branch that's at least 8 inches in diameter (swing), I would say at least 12 inches (Aerial apparatus) to be safe. Make sure the tree is in good health. Cracks or splits in the trunk, dead or hanging branches or decayed spots indicate a tree isn't in tip-top shape. 2. Trees that have a powerful branch is because of its cross section, a piece of 12 inches long and one and a half inches wide can support a weight of 20 tons (40,000lbs). The cellulose fibers and the lignin act together to form this strength. 3. Just like a tire swing, a wooden tree swing, Aerial Apparatus should hang from a strong, hardwood tree. Maple and oak are great options, as well as hornbeam and sycamore. Opt for a plank of cedar or redwood. 4. Fruit trees are more brittle, so don't pick them for your Aerial Apparatus. 5. A general rule of thumb is to expect a force of 750 pounds. Then to be safe you want a safety factor of at least 5:1 (note 8:1 or 10:1 would be better!), so now that means you should be asking that branch to hold a minimum of 3,750 pounds. 6. Always test your aerial apparatus on the tree by the ground with a thick mat. Do not do dynamic moves until you know the tree is safe!!!! 7. The general rule of thumb is that hanging from trees are dangerous. You do NOT know the condition of the tree. You can hire an arborist to be safe. Trees may look totally safe on the outside and then have something inside them that will kill you if you try to hang from! So to play it safe. Hire someone to inspect your tree first.
