On May 6, 2025, Judge Camile L. Neider of the Second District Court of Utah handed down Shane Peterson's fate for his role in the death of 12-year-old Gavin Peterson. During the sentencing hearing, Neider heard letters from Gavin’s family expressing that Shane would get the maximum sentence for child abuse homicide, aggravated child abuse, and endangerment of a child.
