The word Denmark seems to come from two elements: the first is Dan, which is thought to be a reference to the Danes, an ancient North Germanic tribe whose name probably ultimately comes from an early Germanic word meaning "flat land." One of the earliest legendary kings of the Danes was also called Dan, or Halfdan.
