JD Malat Gallery is delighted to present to you Kojo Marfo’s retrospective ‘Crucible of Hope’ at the iconic Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan. At its core, the Heydar Aliyev Centre is a space that implores development and encourages cultural conversation, join us as we celebrate Marfo’s artistic journey and witness the different strands of his artistic oeuvre. Marfo draws inspiration from traditional Akan fertility dolls and blends them with art historical Western motifs, providing poignant commentary on the joys and struggles of moving to and living in the West. Influenced by Picasso, El Salahi and Léger, Marfo’s work employs a cultural hybridity, highlighting that all of us, regardless of origin, have unified experiences.
