Kammersinfonie op.110a is an arrangement of Shostakovich' Eighth String Quartet. It is considered one of his most poignant pieces. At the top of every printed score, it is stated that the string quartet was written “in memory of the victims of fascism and war.” Because of this, the quartet was long associated with the Second World War. This connection was reinforced by the circumstances in which Shostakovich wrote the quartet. In the summer of 1960, Shostakovich traveled to East Germany to finalize the music for the war film The Five Days and Nights near Dresden. At that time, the severe devastation caused by the war was still clearly visible. Previously, Shostakovich had already written his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies in response to the horror and destruction of the same war. Shortly after the premiere of the Eighth String Quartet, Shostakovich stated in a brief interview that he wanted to dedicate the quartet “in memory of the victims of fascism and war.” However, later sources revealed that Shostakovich likely made this statement to conceal the true background of the work. In 1960, Shostakovich experienced a deep depression. His daughter Galina recalled that on a summer day in 1960, her father came out of the house, walked into the garden, and announced that he had just finished a piece dedicated to himself. In short, the ‘victim of fascism’ to whom the quartet was dedicated was Dmitri Shostakovich himself. After the premiere by the then-famous Beethoven Quartet, the work became a true hit. The String Quartet Opus 110 was played throughout the Soviet Union, and numerous unauthorized arrangements of the work appeared. Conductor Rudolf Barshai created an arrangement for string orchestra of the Eighth String Quartet and presented it to the composer. Shostakovich immediately authorized the arrangement and named the work Chamber Symphony Opus 110a.
