Composed in 1948-1951, "The Rake’s Progress" is Stravinsky’s only true opera. Its libretto is based on a series of eight paintings by 18th-century English artist William Hogarth, which Stravinsky saw in 1947 at an exhibition in Chicago. At the insistence of the composer, the opera premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, on 11 September 1951 (which is also Samuel Ramey's favorite opera house). ~ In this scene at the beginning of Act II, the cunning Nick Shadow, another incarnation of the Devil in Samuel Ramey's brilliant gallery of diabolic characters, urges Tom Rakewell (Leo Goeke) to abandon his beloved Anne and marry the bearded Baba the Turk, all under the guise of securing his future. With mesmerizing ease, Nick manipulates Tom, weaving an illusion of grandeur while leading him ever closer to ruin. ~ Samuel Ramey has mentioned that Nick Shadow is one of his favorite roles. With his superbly versatile vocals and stylish acting his performance is spellbinding: at times darkly humorous, at others utterly chilling. His Shadow can make you laugh with his charm and wit, only to send shivers down your spine a moment later. Check out that "Well?" for added trembling 😨 ~ I have a deep admiration for the libretto of this opera—the poetry is simply perfect. W. H. Auden (considered, and well-deserved, the English Paul Valéry) and Chester Kallman crafted a text of such elegance and precision that every line feels like a work of art. ~ This video is a fragment from the recording of the Glyndebourne Opera Festival Production (1977). Correct me if I am wrong, this is one of the very few video recordings of Samuel Ramey in his 30s availavlble. I added English and French subtitles. Watch, listen, and enjoy! 💚✨ ~ 01:10 Come, Master, observe the host of mankind (Nick) 02:39 In youth the panting slave (Nick) 04:57 My tale shall be told (Tom & Nick) #SamuelRamey #BassBaritone #StarBasso
