He gave the world the word "robot" — but Karel Čapek was much more than a science fiction pioneer. Born in Bohemia in 1890, Čapek was one of the most influential writers and intellectuals of interwar Europe. His plays, novels, and essays explored technology, ethics, and democracy. As fascism rose in Germany and Italy, Čapek became one of the first voices to publicly warn of its dangers. He died just months before the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia — a man broken by fear for his country, yet proud for never compromising his values.
