What I Feed My Chickens 🐓 I did some research since I have my rooster Romeo, and when you keep a mixed flock, you now have mixed nutritional needs. As it turns out, traditional layer feed has too much calcium for roosters and could potentially lead to health problems. I know there's many who only feed layer feed to their mixed flocks and have never had any problems.. But over time, excess calcium consumption could cause kidney issues, soft bones in growing birds, and an overall reduced lifespan. So I choose to feed flock raiser, which is higher in protein and lower in calcium than layer feeds, and I supplement oyster shell for my hens extra calcium. At first, I offered a separate feeder of oyster shell, but they were constantly spilling it, so now I just layer it in the feed. The recipe that works for me and this particular feeder is about 4-6 cups of feed, 2 cups of scratch, and a couple of handfuls each of oyster shell and grit. I repeat the layers until it's full. 10 chickens empty this feeder in about 2 days, and there's only ever dust and a small amount of calcium left. So, if you feed grit and/or oyster shell separately and you don't quite feel like they're eating it.. then try what I do and layer it in the feed! #chickenfeed #rooster #hen #backyardchickens
