Celiac Disease - Gluten Intolerance

Celiac disease is an immune disease that can affect males and females of all ages and is mainly found in those of European descent. It is characterized by the bodies abnormal response to gluten which leads to damage of the small intestinal lining and subsequently can lead to problems with absorbing nutrients. Symptoms of celiac can be excess gas, bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss. Treatment involves a gluten free diet. Avoidance of wheat, barley, rye, oats, brewer’s yeast and processed foods. It is important to treat patients with celiac to decrease their risk for complications including ulcerative jejunitis (inflammation of small bowel), intestinal Lymphoma and dermatitis herpetiformis.
