“Heil dir im Siegerkranz” (Hail to Thee in the Victor’s Crown) was the imperial anthem of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, and earlier the royal anthem of Prussia from 1795 to 1918. • Origin: Lyrics were written by Heinrich Harries in 1790. The melody was borrowed from the British anthem “God Save the King”. • Adoption: First adopted by Prussia in 1795 as a royal anthem, later becoming the anthem of the newly founded German Empire in 1871. • Character: A patriotic hymn, glorifying the Kaiser as the ruler blessed by the people and by divine providence. It was ceremonial, performed at official state occasions and military events. • Legacy: After the fall of the monarchy in 1918, it was replaced by “Das Lied der Deutschen” (Song of the Germans). Today, “Heil dir im Siegerkranz” is remembered as a symbol of imperial Germany and its monarchist tradition. 👉 In short: “Heil dir im Siegerkranz” is a German imperial anthem (1795–1918), originally Prussian, set to the tune of “God Save the King,” celebrating the Kaiser as the victorious ruler of the nation.
