Dr. Julius Garvey, Son of Marcus Garvey Keynotes PuLSE Forum on Global Black Freedom Struggle

Dr. Julius Garvey, an accomplished surgeon and the youngest son of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the father of the 20th century Black freedom struggle, accepted the invitation of The PuLSE Institute, where he delivered a rare keynote address before the Institute on September 16, 2021. His address focused on the legacy of his father, his philosophical impact on the modern day Black Lives Matter movement, and the importance of the @Justice4Garvey initiative, which is asking for a full posthumous exoneration of Garvey by President Joe Biden. During the Q&A session after his keynote, Dr. Garvey called for the full exoneration of his father laying out the fault lines surrounding his conviction. Bankole Thompson, a nationally renowned journalist and culture critic, who is the editor-in-chief and dean of The PuLSE Institute moderated the Q&A session with Dr. Garvey. Thompson is a twice-a-week opinion columnist at The Detroit News. Attorney Tina M. Patterson, the president and director of research at The PuLSE Institute, welcomed Dr. Garvey to the Institute's virtual forum. She pointed to the many dimensions of his father's tremendous contributions to the global Black freedom struggle and how he influenced the Civil Rights Movement. The PuLSE Institute is a national independent anti-poverty think tank headquartered in Detroit, the nation's largest African American city, which also has the distinction of being one of the biggest poverty-stricken cities. The Institute's National Advisory Panel is comprised of luminaries with decades of anti-poverty work including Dr. Bernard LaFayette, veteran civil rights leader and the National Coordinator of the 1968 Poor People's Campaign, who was a top aide to the Rev Martin Luther King Jr., Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr., Presiding Bishop Emeritus of the Church of God in Christ, the largest Black Christian denomination in the country, Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, leading Catholic social justice advocate, Dr. Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Janice Kearney, former presidential diarist, Robert Weiner, a former White House spokesman and Herb Boyd, the noted journalist, historian and author of books on James Baldwin and Malcolm X.
