India is one of the most water-stressed countries in Asia. Almost 600 million people are estimated to suffer from water insecurity in the world’s most populous country. But as India looks to shore up its water supplies, it could run into friction with its neighbours, with whom it shares many rivers and streams. With China, tit-for-tat dam building could have severe consequences for local communities. With Bangladesh, a 30-year water sharing agreement over the Ganges is coming to an end, at a low point in bilateral relations. And with Pakistan, a 65-year-old water treaty has been suspended, following a brief armed conflict between India and Pakistan earlier this year. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has been compared to an “act of war” by Islamabad. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said “Blood and water cannot flow together”. But will increasing water scarcity put India on a path to conflict with its neighbours?
