COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - When it's hot and muggy, it's hard to think about the cold weather but the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky never stops thinking it. It's asking the community to pitch in with supplies. This upcoming winter is the tenth year a shelter in Northern Kentucky is opening its doors to those who need a warm place to sleep. Executive director Kim Webb says there's a lot that the shelter needs. "This is my pants shelf, this is our men's pants so you can see I have no pants right now. None" The shelter has less than a month to prepare. "It's life or death in many instances the ability to stay warm being exposed to the elements." Besides pants the shelter needs twin sized sheets, coffee, cereal, shampoo, conditioner. And it needs to be done on a budget. "It's not cheap, but we do a whole lot with a whole little." It costs $22 a night for each guest. Last year during the cold months, the shelter helped almost 600 men and women stay warm. "It's coming and we're well on our way to planning because if the temperature was to take a dive in the next two weeks we could open. Last year we opened Oct. 26." Webb says when the number of beds is lower than the number of people who need to stay warm, it's a sad situation. But with supplies, those who need it the most won't have to walk away empty handed. "If we can't shelter them, a lot of times they will say do you have a blanket sweatshirt or a coat." The shelter in Northern Kentucky is a no judgment facility. The building doesn't even have a sign on the outside to make sure those who need help can walk in without feeling embarrassed.
