When World War II began, thousands of men and women from across the Caribbean answered Britain’s call to fight. From Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados to St. Lucia and Guyana, they left their islands to serve in the Royal Air Force, the Caribbean Regiment, and the Merchant Marine. Heroes like Ulric Cross of Trinidad flew over 80 missions with the RAF, while others built roads, cleared mines, and kept vital supply lines alive during the Battle of the Atlantic. But even as they served, these Caribbean soldiers faced racism, lower pay, and neglect. When the war ended, many returned home forgotten — their stories erased from the official record. They fought for freedom abroad while being denied it at home. Their courage paved the way for the Windrush Generation and the postwar fight for equality. 👉 Do you think these Caribbean soldiers deserve to be remembered alongside the rest of the Allies?
