The Native Dancer series is Vera's special gift to the legendary Wayne Shorter on his 87th birthday, celebrated on August 25th. Vera handpicked outstanding musicians to show their perspective and perform each song of the album Native Dancer, Shorter's first collaboration with Brazilian icon Milton Nascimento. Subscribe to our channel to watch all the videos! Due to this pandemic crisis, and since Vera's Heartbeat tribute to Shorter was postponed to 2021, Vera envisioned this project to join the ongoing efforts to help Shorter with medical expenses. We're supporting the San Francisco Jazz Organization to raise funds for the Wayne Shorter Fund. Be sure to subscribe to our channel and don't miss the next videos! Please donate here: https://www.sfjazz.org/support/donati... Shorter recorded Native Dancer in 1974, soon after moving to California and it shows his love for Brazilian music. He decided to team up with iconic Brazilian singer #MiltonNascimento shortly after meeting him in Brazil circa 1972. Nascimento and his longtime musical partners, the keyboardist #WagnerTiso and the drummer #RobertinhoSilva, came to Los Angeles to record the album with Shorter, #AirtoMoreira, #DaveMcDaniel, #DavidAmaro, #JayGraydon, and #HerbieHancock. Here's a beautiful arrangement of Beauty and the Beast by #DavidBinney, also on the soprano saxophone, #FredericoHeliodoro on bass, #LucaMendoza on keys, and #BenRing on drums! Video edit: #MikaMutti David Binney: "I’m someone who knows a lot of music, but when asked in interviews “what’s your favorite record”? and/or, “who is your favorite musician”? Inevitably I say Native Dancer and Wayne Shorter. The record came out when I was 13. I had just started playing the saxophone. When I heard that record, I knew that being a musician was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So… I’d say it was pretty important! To get to do my own arrangement of Beauty and the Beast and to have it presented to Wayne, who has been the ultimate artistic hero of mine for my whole life, is a complete honor and thrill for me." *************************** "This Native Dancer series was created as a birthday gift to me. It's great to see the past functioning as a flashlight into the creative process of this new generation. I want to thank Vera and everyone who has been a part of this! Can't find anything hipper than THANK YOU!!!" Wayne Shorter
