Fans of City Hunter, Cyber City Oedo 808 and Dirty Pair cannot miss this quintessential gem from the late 1980s OVA boom in Japan. OVAs were direct-to-video releases, bypassing the censorship and runtime constraints of television, allowing for more mature themes, graphic violence, fanservice, and high production values that early TV anime often lacked. The story centers on Bean Bandit, an impossibly tough, bullet-shrugging, muscular getaway driver, and his young, sharp-shooting partner, Rally Vincent, operating out of a gritty, realistic Chicago. The duo, who charge astronomical fees for their services, are hired for a seemingly simple job: safely delivering a kidnapped heiress, Chelsea Grimwood, back to her family. However, the job is a setup orchestrated by Bean's arch-nemesis, the shape-shifting criminal mastermind Semmerling, who frames Bean and Rally for the kidnapping itself. What follows is a relentless, action-packed chase across the city as Bean tries to evade the entire Chicago Police Department, clear his name, and settle the score with Semmerling. Riding Bean was written, designed, and supervised by Kenichi Sonoda, a creative force who had just made a name for himself as the character designer for the influential cyberpunk OVA series Bubblegum Crisis (1987). Riding Bean is a clear passion project, heavily influenced by Sonoda's love for American 1970s and 80s action films, particularly car-chase movies like Bullitt and The Blues Brothers. The production team at Studio AIC and Artmic went to great lengths to ensure authenticity, including sending photographers to Chicago to capture the cityscapes for accurate background art. Crucially, Riding Bean was intended as a pilot for an ongoing OVA series based on Sonoda's short manga, but due to a falling out with one of the financiers (Toshiba EMI), only this single 48-minute episode was ever produced. This forced early cancelation led Sonoda to create his far more successful, long-running manga series, Gunsmith Cats, which features Rally Vincent as the main protagonist (though redesigned) and Bean Bandit as a recurring character.
