What does it really take to improve men’s health and wellbeing in the UK? And why is the conversation around masculinity and gender equality still so politically charged? In this episode of Men on Show, host Andrew Pain, sits down with journalist and campaigner Ally Fogg, Chair of the Association for Male Health & Wellbeing (AMHWW) to explore the reality of supporting men and boys today, what’s changing, and what still isn't. Ally shares how he found himself writing about male victims, fatherhood, family courts and men’s mental health while working with (and sometimes against the grain of) major media platforms. We dig into the rapid growth of the men’s wellbeing sector over the last 15 years, how International Men’s Day shifted from “punchline” to mainstream, and why policy still struggles to keep up with lived experience. We also unpack one of the most controversial issues in UK policy: The dumping of male victims of domestic and sexual abuse into the “Violence Against Women and Girls” framework — and what a genuinely gender-inclusive strategy would look like. You’ll also hear Ally outline AMHWW’s six-point charter for supporting men and boys in all their diversity — while working constructively alongside women’s services — and he closes with a message of hope for anyone working in this space. Key topics we cover: Men’s mental health, suicide, trauma and survivorship Male victims of domestic and sexual abuse — what support is missing Why “gender inclusive” policy matters (health, homelessness, prison, education) International Men’s Day: from backlash to national momentum The shift from Men & Boys Coalition to AMHWW (launched 2025) A practical roadmap for the sector: collaboration over competition Join / learn more about AMHWW: Visit their website - https://www.amhw.org.uk/ and follow the prompts to become a member (for organisations, professionals and academics working in the sector).
