Episode 481 Dennis (Philip Lowrie) feels strained by the heavy lifting duties at the corner shop. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) is eager to apply for the manageress position at the Laundryer but struggles with how to tell Emily (Eileen Derbyshire). Dennis is humiliated when Irma (Sandra Gough) orders him around at the shop and Sandra (Heather Moore) sews a button on his overalls which makes Lionel (Edward Evans) suspect inappropriate behaviour between them. Len (Peter Adamson) returns Elsie's stocking left at the Laundryer via Mrs. Claxton (Anne Dyson). Emily blurts out to Elsie that she's fired but Elsie is unperturbed and requests to leave earlier. Len's humorous explanation about Elsie's stocking scandalises Annie (Doris Speed) especially when Charlie (Gordon Rollings) is mentioned. The Walkers argue over Jack's (Arthur Leslie) bowling match as it conflicts with Annie's lady victualler’s meeting. Irma once again begins to have doubts about marriage fearing a mundane future like the other couples in the street. Jack wins his bowling match despite Annie giving him the cold shoulder. Len, Charlie, and Albert (Jack Howarth) plan a fishing trip. Elsie proceeds with her Laundryer application while Dennis considers a rep job due to the attractive salary.
