COMPASS 2025-05-22: Borja Gonzales Reguero, University of California Santa Cruz "Evaluating the Role of Reef-Based Solutions for Coastal Protection Across Spatial Scales" Climate hazards pose an increasing threat to coastal communities, economies, and aging infrastructure, especially in low-lying coastal zones. As coastal zones become increasingly populated and challenged by extreme weather events, communities and planners are urgently seeking effective solutions. The use of natural and nature-based infrastructure solutions has been gaining increasing momentum in the U.S. and internationally. The seminar will present and discuss integrated assessments from regional to project scales of the role of coral reefs and reef-based engineering to protect communities and infrastructure. These advances in the valuation of natural infrastructure and nature-based engineered systems for risk reduction are the result of extensive collaboration with the University of Miami and the Rosenstiel School on coral reefs for coastal protection in various projects. We will also discuss future collaboration and joint solutions to advance innovative nature-based infrastructure in Miami, Florida and other regions.
