Palette is also packaged in a cardboard box. Inside: Include pigment and paint info, which I really appreciate and find that it makes painting a bit more accessible as it demystifies it Waterbrush- pretty standard waterbrush, although many of the bristles are bent out of shape and the barrel is a bit cracked and might leak water Half pans- not wrapped, a bit dusty, which is kinda strange. Extruded paints. Swatching: I spritzed them with water, and already I can see light patches blooming Colors in this set (from the included card)- see linked shownotes These really seem to muddy the water fast, so there’s definitely some optical brighteners in there, but there are also several intentionally opaque colors (this is normal btw) like many of the yellows, oranges, and the two ‘flesh tints’. The paints do glob up on the brush, but they also activate fast, and seem to have decent color payoff So far, the colors swatch pretty vibrant, there are a couple that seem to dry desaturated, but so far, not bad. However, the higher price point puts them in competition with the Rosa Galleria, Mungyo, Meiliang, and Superior watercolors, and while the Mungyo left a lot to be desired, the other three are great. Granulation isn’t really noticeable in these swatches- the ultramarine might have a smidge, as might the black, but not a whole lot. Hopefully, the wet into wet test will reveal more. Color Mixing: Atomic: The palette includes mixing surfaces, so I’ll use those Fairly easy to mix oranges, greens, and a decent purple, but colors seem a lot less saturated than their premixed counterparts. The Payne’s Grey I mixed is less impressive, so this is kinda a red flag for me- these aren’t necessarily terrible mixers, but a fieldtest will really reveal any hidden issues. Optical: Fair easy to find our cool yellow, warm yellow, cool red, warm red, cool blue, warm blue. Some lifting occurred- not sure if I didn’t wait long enough for the first layer to dry (I do have the dehumidifier on), and there’s some muddiness to the glazes. Lift Test: Everything lifts almost the same amount, but none of it is too lifting? It makes it challenging to tell how these will do in a field test- it seems like the color is stuck pretty well to the paper Wet into Wet Test: So these don’t really granulate out that much in the wet into wet test- the ultramarine blue kinda does, and the Cerulean Blue Hue does a bit, but otherwise, everything feels kinda like the same granulation and dries quite a bit muted. Compared to other watercolors: Mungyo: https://tinyurl.com/44yhf2hy Etchr: https://tinyurl.com/ykxrpzj7 Meiliang: https://tinyurl.com/26x77h7r Superior Folding Palette: https://tinyurl.com/3pczrxmm Rosa Galleria: https://tinyurl.com/mwp5vpam Schpirerr Farben: https://tinyurl.com/mrxnhsze Giorgione: https://tinyurl.com/2p8w636c Pros: A lot of bright colors, similar to the Meiliang and Superior palettes A serviceable, pretty standard metal palette with reusable half pans- standard size Cons: Muddy the water quickly Full of optical brighteners Kinda expensive for what they are and offer The Verdict: These just feel very mediocre to me. There’s many better, many worse, and these are kinda expensive to be ambiguous. Skip these. They’re unremarkable, and while somewhat serviceable, are expensive for what they offer, and there are cheaper alternatives that perform better.
