In the Rajya Sabha biennial elections, the ruling NDA strengthened its hold, winning eight of the 11 seats contested on Monday across Bihar, Odisha, and Haryana. In Bihar, the NDA swept all five seats, with JD(U) chief and CM Nitish Kumar, BJP’s Nitin Nabin, Union minister Ram Nath Thakur, Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha, and BJP’s Shivesh Kumar emerging victorious. Outgoing MP Amarendra Dhari Singh lost despite support from five AIMIM MLAs and one BSP legislator. In Odisha, the BJP won three of the four seats, including Independent Dilip Ray, BJP chief Manmohan Samal, and sitting MP Sujeet Kumar, while BJD’s Santrupt Misra secured the remaining seat. The Odisha results saw cross-voting, triggering allegations of “horse trading” from BJD MLA Dibya Shankar Mishra, though Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi hailed the outcome as a milestone for a “Samruddha Odisha,” strengthening the state’s voice in the Upper House.
