This is a practice video for use by Detroit Youth Volume students and beyond! Performer is Suzuki teacher Ashley Nelson, of Detroit Youth Volume www.detroityouthvolume.org. Setting is The Historic Blue Bird Stage, part of a 2019 exhibit in the Detroit Historical Museum called Salvaging Sound: The Detroit Sound Conservancy and the Struggle to Preserve Detroit's Musical Legacies http://detroitsoundconservancy.org/sa... DETROIT YOUTH VOLUME teaches youth ages 3-18 to play strings using the world-class Suzuki method to nurture perseverance, creativity, collaboration and empathy. Since 2010, DYV has made quality arts education free & accessible to low-income families, especially youth from Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Paying and scholarship students alike receive the same excellent music education. We strive to function as an anti-racist, pro-Black Suzuki studio. In addition to maintaining a team of excellent Suzuki teachers with equitable representation in mind, annual collaborations with local artists as guest instructors develop positive cultural identities in our students as Detroiters and as youth of color (applicable to 70% of our kids). These have resulted in albums celebrating Suzuki songs and Detroit-centric genres like hip hop, jazz & techno.
