Let's explore the concept of 'kinesphere' from the somatic movement world, and its neuroscientific counterpart, peripersonal space. Here's a recent excerpt from my ongoing collaboration with Ben Korta. Many times per second, our brains catalogue incoming stimuli -- future/present/past -- within a malleable spatial bubble that influences our sense of self. The boundaries of this bubble modulate the intensity of events, the narrative of body ownership, the distinctions between self and other. When a person has persistent pain or movement dysfunction, when they experience body dysmorphia or dysautonomia, this kinesphere becomes a crucial space to safely re-inhabit. In class we explored balancing a pencil and interacting with nearby people, and we discussed the impact of trauma on our perception of personal space. ---------- The time is nigh (!) to sign up for next Saturday June 29th's 4-hr class: ⚡Mapping the Soma, pt 1: Shaping Senses with Enactive Imagery⚡ A course for somatic explorers, movement teachers, and embodied healthcare practitioners.
