From Dirt to Dark Skies – AstroPeak Construction Update #1

In this first construction update for AstroPeak Observatory, we’re excited to share the progress happening on-site as we begin building our remote astrophotography facility. This week we focused on several key infrastructure milestones. We roughed in the 700-foot access road that leads from the main road back to the observatory site. The observatory sits about 700 feet from the road, so we cleared brush and excavated the path to allow construction equipment and materials to reach the property. We also completed trenching for underground power and fiber, digging a 4-foot deep trench that runs from the road all the way back to where the observatory will sit. Running utilities underground allows us to avoid power poles that could obstruct the horizon for the telescopes. Our temporary site office is now in place as well. This will serve as our base of operations during construction and will also act as storage for telescope equipment boxes while systems are hosted at AstroPeak. Behind the scenes, we’ve also made progress on the observatory automation systems. Our roof opening system has been designed using a distributed architecture capable of supporting multiple observatories while maintaining reliable and safe remote operation. We’re also currently developing the weather monitoring system, which will use multiple sensors across the property to detect changing conditions and automatically protect the observatories when needed.
