His scientific career started with an undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Southampton, during which he realised that the plant science modules were the most interesting to him. This led to an MRes focused on Plant Science research. After graduating, Kieran worked for Forest Research, testing for the plant pathogen Phytophtora ramorum before moving to Kew Gardens, where he focused more on the mycology side of biology as part of a project aiming to genome sequence the UK’s native fungi. Kieran then decided to move out of the lab, and into the policy side of things. He currently leads the RSB’s plant and environmental sciences policy work, looking to ensure that Government policy is based on the scientific advice of the bioscience community.
